In 2009, Faculty of Metallurgical and Energy Engineering is established due to a new round of adjustment of the subject. There are three majors including metallurgical engineering, energy and power engineering and new energy science and engineering.
Faculty of Metallurgical and Energy Engineering is the most prominent and characteristic faculty in education, and enjoys the name of "five- star" level of Kunming University of Science and Technology. With continuous development of the two disciplines of metallurgy and energy has become the significant base for high-level personnel training, scientific research and social services and made significant contributions to national and local economic construction, scientific research and personnel training.
At present, in the faculty there are characteristic research fields including vacuum metallurgy, unconventional metallurgy, metallurgical melt (solution) physical chemistry, heavy non-ferrous metal smelting, metallurgy process intensification and energy conservation and new energy preparation, etc.. There are also 1state-level key discipline, 1 provincial key discipline, 1 construction of key discipline, 1 post-doctoral station, 1 program for Doctorate degree, and 1 program for master degree. The national and provincial research platforms in the faculty include 2 national engineering laboratories, 1 State Key Laboratory Breeding Base, 1 Key Laboratory, Ministry of Education, research center for engineering technology and key laboratory of Yunnan province, national and provincial teaching platform for undergraduate experimental teaching, 1 national teaching team and 1 provincial teaching team. There are I innovation team of Ministry of Education, 3 provincial innovation team, 10 university innovation team, 8 University Discipline team, 1 international cooperation research lab, and 1 school-enterprise cooperation platform. The faculty has undertaken a number of national and provincial and ministerial level projects including teaching and scientific research and has obtained a large number of achievements on scientific research and teaching and patented technology.
"Process and equipment of Pb and Bi elimination by electro refining successive crystallizer" invented by Prof. LI Menggeng is known as the greatest invention of the 20th century tin metallurgy by western metallurgy field. The equipment and technology of internal heating multi-stage continuous distillation vacuum furnace and horizontal vacuum furnace have been spread and utilized in more than 90 enterprises in domestic and abroad with total output value of tens of billions of dollars. A large number of scientific research achievements including key technology of clean efficient use of complex refractory nickel and cobalt resources, key technology of new microwave metallurgical reactor and application, new hydrometallurgical technology of refractory complex zinc oxide ores and key technology of HRB high-intensity reinforced concrete against earthquakes has accomplished industrialization of applications, resulting in significant economic and social benefits. In addition, the faculty has established long-term cooperative relationship with colleges, universities, enterprises and research institutes in Germany, Britain, the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, Spain and Southeast Asia.
